"Transitioning from high school to college:
Expectations, assumptions, and outcomes."

Sponsored by Lehman College &
Macaulay Honors College of the City University of New York

Students, parents and counselors allocate a great deal of energy toward choosing the right environment to pursue higher education. This focus is primarily on the learning environment and programs of study to achieve goals for a fulfilling and satisfying life.  As a result of today’s climate, student bodies are more diverse and students arrive on campus with a variety of expectations. While academics remain the primary focus of college and universities, student development has become important in helping students transition to an environment where they approach their lives with an adult perspective. Theories that student development professionals focus on are cognitive and psychosocial development.  The presentation will focus on psychosocial development and the many issues students face outside the classroom which impacts learning and how colleges attempt to assist students to achieve goals and become productive members of society. This presentation will include a case study presented for discussion.

Dr. Steven Hubbard is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Management and Director of Students Affairs at the McGhee Division at New York University. With Frances Stage he co-edited the 3rd edition of Linking Theory to Practice: Case Studies for Working with College Students. He earned a BS from Iowa State University, a MA from The University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from New York University.  He has worked in higher education over for ten years and is currently on staff at NYU.
