Please join us for a presentation by Dr. Niobe Way:
“BOYS AND THEIR NEED FOR CONNECTION AND FRIENDSHIPS”

Dr. Niobe Way is a Professor of Applied Psychology in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University and is the co-director of the Center for Research on Culture, Development, and Education at NYU.  She is also the President for the Society of Research on Adolescence and is a nationally recognized leader in the field of adolescent development. Her 2011 book, “Deep Secrets: Boys’ Friendships and the Crisis of Connection” is being used in New York City Schools and is required reading for the faculty of a boy’s school near Philadelphia.  This book was written after 20 years of research in the United States and China.  She is interested in how schools, families, and peers as well as larger political and economic contexts influence developmental trajectories. Her work focuses on social identities including gender and racial/ethnic identities, and the effects of these stereotypes on adjustment and friendships. She is an author of many journal articles and books and is the sole author of 2 books and co-author of 3 books. Her book co-authored with Bonnie J. Ross Leadbeater entitled, “Growing Up Fast: Transitions To Early Adulthood of Inner-city Adolescent Mothers” received the Best Book Award from the Society of Research on Adolescence. She received her doctorate from Harvard University in Human Development and Psychology and was an NIMH postdoctoral fellow in the psychology department of Yale University. Her B.A. was earned at the University of California at Berkeley.  She grew up in Paris, Oberlin, Ohio and Palo Alto, California and has been the recipient of numerous academic and professional awards and has received many foundation grants to fund her research.
