BEREAVEMENT WORKSHOP FOR CLINICIANS and COUNSELORS
As mental health professionals, we may encounter clients who have suffered the loss of a loved one (a spouse, sibling, parent, or child). One may refer the person to a bereavement counselor, see the individual, or work in conjunction with a grief counselor. In this session, we'll discuss how the specialized grief counselor may join with psychotherapist or school guidance personnel to mutually support the client. We’ll explore how mental health providers can compliment one another while utilizing one’s clinical skills to move through intense loss. Mass

shootings in Newtown and Aurora have only heightened awareness of our need to come to terms with the unimaginable and how our expertise within agencies and schools may benefit children and adults.

In this seminar the grief process will be revisited while gaining insights and providing interventions to respond to guilt, anger, abandonment, and acceptance. We will learn techniques to be most effective in offering support to enable the telling of their “stories”, dealing with family and friends, and coping in the workplace. How does child or parent loss alter the family system and how can we aid in creating a new normalcy? We’ll discuss “holding on” and “letting go” through voices and essays of moms who have endured and maintain hope.

Most importantly we will look at ways to keep memories alive as death does not end the Relationship.

Emily Laitmon LCSW is a psychotherapist in private practice in NYC and New Rochelle.

She specializes in family therapy, couple counseling, and women’s issues. After her son Daniel died she received additional training in Bereavement, and is a group facilitator for spouse and child loss at the Bereavement Center of Westchester. Her book, “Our Children, Our Hearts: Journeys of Child Loss and Remembrance” was published in 2008.

Another NYSACAC Cross Post - Joan Zinner Scholarship Fund Contributions Sought

Dear NYSACAC Colleagues,
My mother, Joan Zinner, a long-time college counselor and a past president of NYSACAC, passed away on April 22, 2008. In May of that year, I met with Michael Acquilano, who was then President of NYSACAC, to design a vehicle which would honor my mother's life, her commitment to college counseling and her role as a mentor to professionals within our association. We quickly determined that a fund to support participation in the annual conference would be the ideal solution.
 The first grants were awarded just a few weeks later, allowing two secondary counselors to attend the 2008 NYSACAC Conference at Manhattanville College. Since then, the generosity of friends and colleagues have made it possible for 10 additional counselors to take part in what we all know are among the best professional meetings available to members of our field. Two more recipients will be named soon, and they will be with us at Canisius College this June.
 This year marks the fifth anniversary of both my mother's death and the establishment of the Joan Zinner Scholarship Fund in her memory. I hope that you will join me in marking this milestone with a gift to the Joan Zinner Scholarship Fund in support of NYSACAC and our professional community.
